Will Mac OS 10.7 be the last operating system as we know it?

This Monday, June 6th 2011 we're expecting Apple to unveil the next major release of Mac OS X, and some believe this might be the very last version of Apple's desktop operating system as we know it.

It's hard to believe, but, these days Mac OS X is a very ripe operating system. We now all appreciate it's ultra solid core, with very robust base technologies, we're well accustomed to it's speed, reliability and with a multitude of services that most Mac users now take for granted.

However like most technologies, it can be improved on, simplified and the UI (user interface) boosted. We can see Microsoft are thinking the very same thing, and this could be the reason why they're moving to the Windows 8 model, an OS that will be rolled out across it's desktops and tablets and every device in between, with a redesigned user experience.

Of course Apple already uses this model: Mac OS X and iOS contribute common architecture which creates an painless format for developers to create apps for both systems. Mac OS X Lion will be the first step towards consolidation of both these user experiences—touch & desktop —into one. Lion is this transition. However it most likely will require another generation of Mac OS to get there...
