Hard Drive costs rocket since Thailand flood disaster
*** VERY IMPORTANT NEWS - HARD DRIVES BECOMING HARDER TO SOURCE AND INCREASING MORE EXPENSIVE SINCE FLOOD IN THAILAND *** Further info here
For the past few weeks since the devastating flooding in Thailand London Mac Repairs have continued to investigate the rising price of hard disk storage media since the recent floods in Thailand have affected two of the major manufacturers of hard drives. This disaster has caused major damage and indeed, loss of life. The floods are Thailand's worst in half a century, and have left over 500 people dead, according to the government.
They have caused untold damage to the infrastructure in the region. One-fifth of Bangkok is now underwater, according to the BBC. It seems that supplier channels across the globe are now either struggling to source hard drives at 'comfortable' prices or stockpiling existing reserves and 'selling 'em high' as they fear sourcing drives in the coming weeks and months to worsen. The floods have knocked out both Western Digital and Toshiba's disk drive operations at Bangkok, with an industry shortfall this quarter of 50 million or more drives. It is not known how long it will take to get the plants and any affected component suppliers back to full operations but we can expect increasing problems in sourcing new hard drives at affordable prices.
